Yes he did, BUT he left because of the non-authentic Jewish ideology that was being accepted there, and sailed far away to Slobodka. Baruch Hashem, he was indeed saved.

Why did Meir listen to his wife Beruria when she said you should hate the sin but not the sinner? Did it really only refer to highwaymen?

Again, very much agreed. The Torah permits hatred of sinners–look no farther than Pinchos haKohen. Imagine what would have happened if he “loved every Jew”. We must not forget that Moshe Rabbeinu certainly didn’t love every Jew–when Jews sinned he did what had to be done. As a matter of fact, the idea that one must love every person is hardly Jewish–it’s Christian, chas v’shalom!
