Thank you for this comment.

I *also* realize that this term was meant in a technical way, however the fact that Schechter could use such a term even as as technical one, in my opinion, is very revealing. I have a friend, a Baal Tshuvah, whose last name was "Himler". He changed it to "Hillel" when he became frum. Get what I mean...

I liked your comment about his hair.

Unfortunately, I happen to know the darker sides of almost all the great "scholars" of JTS. Your hair would stand on end. Lieberman, Adler, Finkelstein, Ginzburg, all had real awful skeletons in their closets. Maybe we'll do a post about this sometime

I agree with your characterization of Shechter, who did nto wear a yarmulke even in his office. When R. Eliezer Silver came to the USA, he visited Schechter to see if there was a possibility of being employed in his "yeshiva". When he saw Schechter's mane of hair and no yarmulke, he realized that this place was not for him.

However, the term catholic is a technical theological term and should not be confused with "Catholic", which is a name for the religion.

Worth mentioning that The "Re-constructionist" College is on "Church Road" in Philadelphia! Seems like they were tuned into Schechter.
